Magnetic Island Travellers Hideaway

Things to See & Do

Food, drinks & party

Just across the road, you will find some bars, restaurants, cafés and a general store.

The RnR bar, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, does really nice meal-deals till 8 pm. Why not try one of the tropical cocktails at sunset, as the bar overlooks Picnic Bay.

The same bar turns into the 'Funkee Fish' at night where resident Christian Biko, Queensland's best DJ, plays fantastic tunes till late. For a great night out, full of fun and rhythm; please ask our crew about fire poi and drum sessions at the Funkee Fish!

Don't miss the daily ' Happy Hour' at the Picnic Bay hotel, for a cheap beer, a game of pool (free on Thursdays) or a chat with one of the friendly locals while you enjoy your favourite sports game on one of the large screen televisions. Getting hungry while you're there?! You must try their fantastic Pizza's (oven open till late)

Resident Croc

Rin Tin Tin, the Island's giant 4 meter salt water crocodile, who lives next to the bar in the Picnic Bay Hotel, has been a big tourist attraction for years. Just go into the pub and ask one of the lovely staff members to introduce you to Rinnie. You better be quick as Rinnie's got plans to move down to Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

KayJays store, just on the other side of the Picnic Bay mall (2 minute walk) has got everything you need; bread, milk, eggs etc. open from 7 till 7, 7 days per week.

Get around on the Island

We have got bikes for hire. So get active and explore the 'off track' beauty of the Island. Ride to the beauty spot of Westpoint or challenge one of the hills towards Horseshoe Bay.

There are also a few companies who hire trail bikes, scooters, 'Topless cars' and 'Mini Mokes' to drive around the main road of the island. Our friendly staff is more than willing to help you out at any time. When a staff member makes a reservation for you, we'll make sure they will come and pick you up.

There are also different bus passes available, please ask our staff for more information.

Outdoor activities

Because of the good weather and the beautiful scenery, the smallness of the Island (only 12 by 9 km) and lots of different bays, loads of outdoor activities can be done.

Beach, swimming & fishing

It's only a 1 minute walk from Travellers Hideaway to the lovely beach with year round swimming enclosure and the Picnic bay jetty, which offers many fishing opportunities. You could hire some snorkel gear and discover the beautiful coral in Picnic or one of the other bays.

Bushwalks

For our low-budget friends, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the lovely views of the National parks and beaches. The 25 km of walking track through the hills of the park, provide a great opportunity to see wildlife in its national habitat and also to enjoy the many spectacular views. We'll tell you where to find the Koalas, wallabies and rainbow lorikeets!

Dive courses

Scuba diving is another big thing on the Island. Talk to one of our crew members about booking a diving course. Introduction dives, Open water or Advanced courses, or dive the famous SS Yongala Wreck, said to be the best wreck dive in Australia (top ten in the world) Diving and snorkeling gear is also available for hire for experienced divers so you can explore the island coral on your own. Please ask our staff for our discount dive / accommodation deals!

Other water sports

Enjoy the most amazing bays during a guided Jet Ski Tour around Maggie Island. Or hire one so you are free to go wherever you want.

There are several sailing and cruising companies doing regular trips to different parts of the Great Barrier Reef, for a relaxing day on the water, with swimming, snorkeling over coral reefs, fishing or just lazing in the sun.

There are guided Sea Kayak and fishing tours available as well as guided snorkel tours in one of the bays.

Has riding a horse along the beach always been one of your dreams? This is your chance to learn how to control an amazing animal!
